whitnailThe moment I opened my eyes this morning, my first thought was, Why is my heart still beating? I've found my reasons to live, to not stop it on purpose, but what does my dedicated heart get out of my little reasons? Eventually it will stop, after all. If I am old, we'll call that a "natural death." When it happens to an infant, we call it "SIDS." If it happens in middle age, we'll want a reason: an overdose or a clogged artery, something to explain the heart's actions. But it all happens naturally. The heart does it on its own. When they remove hearts from people in comas, their hearts continue to beat. Clumsy doctors have been known to let those wildly beating hearts dance right out of their hands, splat!, on the floor. The heart has its own electricity, its own nervous system, a mind of its own. So why does my heart keep beating? My friend told me: Because it loves to beat.
