What's street parking like around the MoMA? I'm assuming its too difficult to find a spot. Are there any half-decent parking areas/garages near it?

Homemade California rolls & ebi nigiri

Before this weekend I'd never attempted to make my own sushi rolls. Considering how adventurous I usually am with food preparation (though not, you know, in a hygiene way), and how much I love sushi, it's kind of odd. In any case the inspiration this time came from my bf, who can eat massive quantities of rolls (so he usually comes away from Japanese restaurants a little bit hungry, because massive quantities of rolls = $$$), and was craving them. So we decided to try making our own, which would be good in a financial sense, and also fun!
Verdict: it WAS both fun and delicious, and did make more financial sense, but I have to say that it's hard work! Really, many props to sushi chefs, whose creativity and skill I'd never quite appreciated to this level before, now having tried to do what they do.
We decided to keep it simple for this first excursion (though it was amazing how complex even 'simple' stuff is!) and made California rolls and ebi nigiri. While not the perfection you'd get in a real sushi place, we were pretty proud of how our attempts came out! (Plus, no matter what it looks like, it's still delicious, so we had that going for us.)

( Our sushi adventure this way... )

This thing has been relisted like six times. It's obvious it needs a once over from Billy Mays' Ding King and the aisle 4 of Home Depot angle iron brackets the rear springs are mounted too make me nervous too. 5 grand seems to be about as high as it goes and the guy wants more.
I think I would pay 3 grand for it.... too bad it isn't near me because I would totally drive over and waste the guys time trying to bring the price down.
spend another 3,000$ on some subs and some train horns and you have... you have..... well I donno, but it's cool right?
Unique anyways.

Filming on the waterfront

I've realized something extremely frustrating this week about New York's waterfront.
I'm a student filmmaker. I shoot videos, not for profit, but for fun and for my classes. I'm shooting a film in a few weeks where I need to see the skyline. Some accessible waterfront property in Long Island City, Greenpoint or Williamsburg would be ideal. But guess what? There is none.
At least none I can use. Why? Well, a lot of it is private property. Some of it legitimate private property, and some of it illegal private property. There are a lot of PUBLIC streets that are fenced off (illegally) by companies who claim it as their property despite it being a public street owned by the city of New York. So, I can't go to the ends of those streets.
The two main parks (Gantry Plaza and East River) are owned by the state. What does that mean? It means they want to charge me a ridiculous amount of money and wait up to a month to get permits from the state that allow me to film there. Oh, and they only allow it Monday-Friday. (This particular shoot needs to be on a Sunday). If they catch you filming there (as they've done to me twice before at Brooklyn Bridge Park) they kick you out immediately.
And then there's WYNC Transmitter Park which would be great, but the geniuses who "renovated" it recently put up a big beautiful chain link fence that separates land and water and obstructs the view I need.
Water Taxi Beach is another option, I haven't called them yet, but I'm assuming I already know what their answer will be.
So, what do I do? Trespass on some business' property (who are likely closed on Sunday) and risk being arrested? Sure, I could go to Jersey but due to time constraints and my unfamiliarity with the area it's not ideal.
Is there any spot between N 11th street in Williamsburg and the Queensboro Bridge that anybody knows about that I may not?

The paper has targets that are reflective in the infrared, allowing the position and orientation of the paper to be tracked to within 1 cm. The positional data of the paper is then used to change the image being projected onto the paper, giving it the illusion of allowing you to see slices of a 3D space.

December 6 Workshop or conference. Was there a conference or workshop you attended that was especially beneficial? Where was it? What did you learn?
I can't really answer this with all the specifics, because things that are academically identifying is stuff I usually keep locked and filtered...but I did go to a wonderful small conference two months ago, gave a paper as a part of a panel on resource extraction, and learned a lot of fascinating things about the gendering of gold vs. diamond mining, among other things.
Unrelated to this, I watched the latest two episodes of Dollhouse, and I just want to say that I love characters playing other characters because of things like body possession on Joss Whedon's show ( spoilers for Dollhouse 2.5 and 2.6 and Buffy season 4 )

For years I have been baking the same old cookie recipe. It's a pretty good recipe too. Occasionally I come across a new recipe and am tempted to stray. I'm so glad I did today because I may have found my new favourite cookie recipe! The texture is just about perfect. Nice and crisp on the first bite, lovely and chewy on the inside. Even better it's egg free so my friend who's allergic can partake too. Find the recipe over at AnnaintheKitchen.

Chink Found In Armor Of Perfect Cloak - Science News
Even though a working invisibility cloak has never been made, scientists are theorizing how to beat one, should it become possible to produce. They theorize that showering an area with charged particles, like electrons, would reveal the presence of "something", even they can't tell what, exactly, it is. In essence, it would be away to detect the existence and location of a cloaked entity.

Amino Acid Recipe Could Be Right For Long Life - Science News
A new study into the effects of calorie restriction on the lifespan of fruit flies hints that the key may be the properly balancing nutritional requirements. Lo-cal diets have been shown to reduce fertility because the body response to a shortage of food by directing energy away from reproduction. The study found that increasing the consumption of methionine restored reproductive function. Other scientists are quick to counter that, while interesting, it is not clear how much of this can be carried over into mammalian models, and that maintaining such an amino acid balance may be effectively impossible in mammals.
